Core Sound Meeting
North Carolina
About fifty yards west of this spot stood the Core Sound Meeting House, the spiritual center of Carteret County's Quaker community for more than a hundred years. The meeting was organized in the early seventeen thirties, and Friends from elsewhere helped build the meeting house. At its height, Core Sound served as a monthly meeting with several smaller congregations throughout the county.
The community began to thin in the late seventeen hundreds and early eighteen hundreds, as many eastern North Carolina Quakers migrated west to Ohio and Indiana, fleeing both the institution of slavery and the unhealthy coastal climate. Migration, not conflict, is what ended one of North Carolina's oldest religious communities.
