Fletcher, North Carolina

North Carolina

Fletcher, in Henderson County just south of Asheville, grew up around a railroad stop established in eighteen eighty-three on the Western North Carolina Railroad. The community took its name from Doctor George Fletcher, the local postmaster, and the arrival of rail transformed what had been a quiet farming crossroads into a small service town for the surrounding apple orchards and vacation estates. By the early twentieth century Henderson County was supplying apples across the eastern seaboard, and Fletcher's depot was a shipping point for the harvest.

The town incorporated in nineteen eighty-nine, remarkably late, reflecting how slowly this corridor grew permanent civic infrastructure even as it filled with residents commuting to Asheville. Today Fletcher is one of the fastest-growing communities in western North Carolina, its location between the Asheville metro and the Hendersonville valley making it a prime address for people seeking mountain proximity without city prices.
