Mooresville Mill Village
North Carolina
Around the turn of the twentieth century the Mooresville Cotton Mills opened in Iredell County, North Carolina, and within a few years the company had built an entire world around the factory. Between nineteen oh two and nineteen thirty, the mill constructed more than four hundred homes for its workers, along with shops, churches, and sports teams. The earliest houses were modest three-room cottages with front and back porches; later additions grew to four and five rooms as the company expanded.
It was a classic Southern mill village: the company owned the land, the housing, and much of daily life. The operation eventually closed. The neighborhood survived and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in twenty twelve.
