Birthplace of Tecumseh
Near Dayton, Ohio
Tecumseh, one of the most formidable Native American leaders in United States history, was born in seventeen sixty-eight, by local tradition near the Mad River, though historians are not certain where. He was Shawnee, born into a time of relentless pressure on Indigenous lands east of the Mississippi. Oral tradition holds that a shooting star blazed across the sky at the moment of his birth, and his name is often translated as "Shooting Star" or "Panther Across the Sky."
Tecumseh spent his life trying to build a pan-tribal confederacy to resist American expansion, traveling deep into the South to recruit nations to his cause. He allied with the British in the War of eighteen twelve and was killed at the Battle of the Thames in Canada in October eighteen thirteen. He was around forty-five years old.
This marker, placed in nineteen ninety-two, acknowledges the sacred ground of his origin.
