Gowdy Cemetery: Xenia's Founding Generations
Near Dayton, Ohio
Gowdy Cemetery is one of the oldest burial grounds in Greene County, Ohio, established in eighteen twenty when James Gowdy sold the land. For more than three decades it served as the principal resting place for Xenia's earliest settlers, remaining in active use until eighteen fifty-three. Among those buried here are veterans of both the Revolutionary War and the War of eighteen twelve, men who had fought in two defining American conflicts before settling on the Ohio frontier. A marker here recognizes the site as a tangible link to the founding generation of a community established just a few years after Ohio achieved statehood.
