Newton Falls, Ohio: Falls on Two Branches

Near Youngstown, Ohio

Newton Falls in Trumbull County takes its name from the waterfalls it straddles, two sets of cascades on separate branches of the Mahoning River that meet within the village limits. The land came to American settlers as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve, sold off by the Connecticut Land Company in the early eighteen hundreds. Early settlers believed the Newton name came from Newtown, Connecticut, the community many of them left behind before crossing the Appalachians into Ohio.

The first families arrived in the early years of the eighteen hundreds, and the settlement later incorporated as a village. The twin falls that named the place still run through town, a geographical coincidence that made this Trumbull County village easy to remember on a map.
