Perrysburg, Ohio

Near Toledo, Ohio

Perrysburg was born out of the War of eighteen twelve. In February of eighteen thirteen, General William Henry Harrison supervised the construction of Fort Meigs on a bluff above the Maumee River. It was the largest wooden-walled fortification ever built in North America, a desperate attempt to hold the northwest frontier against British and Native forces pushing down from Canada.

The fort held. Just after the war ended, surveyors platted the town of Perrysburg on those same bluffs in eighteen sixteen, naming it for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, who had won the decisive naval Battle of Lake Erie in September of eighteen thirteen. Perry's victory on the water and Harrison's defense on land are what made this corner of Ohio American.

Today Perrysburg is one of the wealthier suburbs of Toledo.
