Two Unknown Soldiers of Mad Anthony Wayne's Army

Ohio

Near this spot lie two soldiers whose names have never been recorded.

In seventeen ninety-three, General Anthony Wayne, the commander known as Mad Anthony, marched his Legion of the United States north through Ohio to break the power of a Western Confederacy of Native nations. The army is said to have camped near here, at a spot called Slabs Camp, on its way toward the decisive engagement that would come the following summer at Fallen Timbers.

Two of his men died at camp, from illness or accident, the record does not say. They were buried on the spot and forgotten. A memorial service held generations later marked the site, but no names were ever recovered from the silence.

Wayne's campaign ended with the Treaty of Greenville in seventeen ninety-five, opening most of Ohio to American settlement. These two men are among its uncounted costs.
