Provine Service Station
Oklahoma
The Provine Service Station near Hydro, Oklahoma, is one of the best-preserved early Route Sixty-Six gas stations surviving in the state, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in nineteen twenty-nine as a two-story Craftsman style building, with the owner's home above the pumps. Caddo County, where it stands, saw thousands of Dust Bowl migrants pass through on Route Sixty-Six during the nineteen thirties.
The station was a practical lifeline, one of the few places along the long flat stretches of western Oklahoma where a driver could get fuel, water, and directions before the next small town appeared on the horizon. Its survival is a matter of modest luck and local care: most stations of its generation were torn down or let fall.
