Stafford Air and Space Museum: From Weatherford to the Moon

Oklahoma

Thomas Stafford was born in Weatherford on September seventeenth, nineteen thirty, and grew up to become one of the most experienced astronauts in NASA history. He flew Gemini Six A in nineteen sixty-five, commanded Gemini Nine A in nineteen sixty-six, orbited the Moon on Apollo Ten in nineteen sixty-nine, and in nineteen seventy-five commanded the American side of the Apollo-Soyuz mission, the first joint spaceflight between the United States and the Soviet Union. He is one of only twenty-four humans to have traveled to the Moon.

The museum named for him in his hometown opened in two rooms at the Weatherford airport in nineteen eighty-three and has grown into a sixty-three-thousand-square-foot facility affiliated with the Smithsonian. On display are the Gemini Six A capsule Stafford piloted, his Apollo Ten spacesuit, a Moon rock, a Titan Two missile, and more than twenty historic aircraft.
