Glendale: Julia by Any Other Name
Oregon
When Solomon Abraham planned a town here in the early eighteen eighties, he named it Julia, after his wife. Abraham had good reason for optimism: the Southern Pacific was building its line through the rugged Siskiyou Pass, and a town at this location would be a natural railroad stop. But the railroad's chief engineer, A.
F. Morris, had other ideas. Morris changed the name to Glendale, and when the line pushed through between eighteen eighty-one and eighteen eighty-three, the post office followed suit, switching from Julia to Glendale in August of eighteen eighty-three.
The town incorporated in nineteen oh one and grew as a railroad service point deep in the canyon country of Douglas County. Julia never appeared on a single train schedule.
