The Chinook Nation: The Language Outlived the Recognition

Oregon

Before Lewis and Clark reached the Pacific, before the fur traders arrived in numbers, before any written map showed the Columbia River's lower reaches, the Chinook people had already built the most sophisticated trade network in the Pacific Northwest. Their language, Chinook Jargon, was a trade pidgin built on a Chinookan grammatical foundation, and it served as the common tongue of the entire coast from Alaska to northern California. Hudson's Bay Company traders used it. Missionaries used it. Indigenous peoples from dozens of distinct language groups used it to communicate with each other and with newcomers.

Lewis and Clark encountered it in eighteen oh five and found themselves in a world where commerce and diplomacy already had a functioning medium of exchange. The Chinook people had built that medium over generations.

The federal government has never given the Chinook Indian Nation sustained recognition. The Bureau of Indian Affairs granted recognition in two thousand one, under the Clinton administration. Eighteen months later, the Bush administration rescinded it. As of twenty twenty-six, the Chinook Indian Nation remains federally unrecognized, meaning tribal members have no access to the federal Indian health, education, housing, or cultural programs that flow from recognition status.

The gap between the region's debt to Chinook diplomacy and the government's position is difficult to reconcile on paper. The language these people created held the Pacific Northwest trade network together for generations. The nation that created it cannot get its calls returned from the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The bridge at Cascade Locks you may have passed is named the Bridge of the Gods, after a Klickitat and Chinook oral tradition. The Chinook people have a relationship with this river that predates the bridge, the dam, the highway, and the United States itself. The recognition petition continues.
