Anna Morris Holstein and the Saving of Valley Forge

Pennsylvania

The woman who lived in this house was one of the most consequential historic preservationists of the nineteenth century. Anna Morris Holstein led the campaign to acquire and restore Washington's Headquarters at Valley Forge, which became a Pennsylvania state park and is now a National Historical Park. She is also credited with helping preserve Mount Vernon, and she helped found the Valley Forge chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

During the Civil War she served as a hospital nurse and matron, including at the Gettysburg camp hospital. She wrote about her wartime experiences, served as a matron of the Pennsylvania Building at the World's Fair, and spent decades ensuring that the ground where the Continental Army survived its worst winter would never be forgotten or built over.
