King of Prussia

Pennsylvania

The name King of Prussia comes from a tavern, and the tavern came from a Welsh Quaker farmhouse built in seventeen nineteen. By seventeen sixty-nine it was operating as an inn, a day's ride by horse from Philadelphia, and by seventeen eighty-six locals called it the King of Prussia Inn, a name often tied to Frederick the Great. George Washington stopped here on Thanksgiving Day, seventeen seventy-seven.

The postal service made the name official for the whole community in eighteen thirty-seven. Today the area is best known for its enormous shopping mall, but the original inn building was carefully moved and preserved when Route Two Hundred Two was widened in the twentieth century.
