Arnold Nawrocki: The Man Who Wrapped Your Cheese
Pennsylvania
Every individually wrapped slice of American cheese traces back, in part, to an engineer who worked on Meadow Street in Clearfield, Pennsylvania. Arnold Nawrocki, born in nineteen twenty-five and living until two thousand three, was employed by the Clearfield Cheese Company when he developed the first commercially successful process for wrapping individual cheese slices. A patent was issued in nineteen fifty-six.
His was the first commercially successful process for wrapping slices one by one. His invention made single-serve cheese a mass-market product and reshaped how American families bought and used dairy. Nawrocki went on to secure eleven food processing patents over his career, but the cheese wrapper may be his most consequential invention, a small engineering solution embedded in the everyday life of nearly every American household.
