Benjamin Walker Homestead: Underground Railroad in Bedford County
Pennsylvania
Bedford County sits just north of the Maryland border, making it a dangerous crossing point for freedom seekers in the decades before the Civil War. From this homestead, Benjamin Walker, Abner Walker, and George Harbaugh worked in close partnership with Black Underground Railroad conductors John Fiddler, Elisa Rouse, and Joseph Crawley to move many fugitive enslaved people northward to freedom. The proximity to Maryland meant that slave catchers and federal marshals operated aggressively in this corridor.
Despite the legal risk under the Fugitive Slave Act, the network at this homestead continued operating, routing people across the mountain and toward safety in the north. The site is a documented station where the names of both white allies and Black conductors are preserved in the historical record.
