Jean Bonnet Tavern
Pennsylvania
The Jean Bonnet Tavern has stood at this fork in the road since seventeen sixty-two. Robert Callender, a trader with the region's Native American tribes, held the property in those early years, and the French trader Jean Bonnet purchased it in seventeen seventy-nine. The tavern sits along what became Forbes Road, the military path General Forbes carved west toward Fort Duquesne in seventeen fifty-eight.
When the Lincoln Highway was built over that same corridor, a new generation of automobile travelers pulled in for food and lodging exactly as soldiers and drovers had done before them. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and still operates as a restaurant and inn today.
