Bullet's Defeat
Pennsylvania
Near this spot on May twenty-second, seventeen fifty-nine, a party of one hundred Virginians under Captain Thomas Bullitt was ambushed by French and Indian forces while moving provisions from Bedford to Fort Ligonier. The attack was swift and devastating. More than forty men were killed or wounded, and much of their supply train was lost.
The skirmish happened months after the British had taken Fort Duquesne at the forks of the Ohio in November seventeen fifty-eight. Fort Ligonier held. The site carries the name Bullet's Defeat, a blunt memorial to one of the last French victories on Pennsylvania soil.
