Saint Vincent Archabbey, First Benedictine Foundation
Pennsylvania
On a tract in Westmoreland County that had held a Catholic parish since the seventeen nineties, Archabbot Boniface Wimmer arrived in eighteen forty-six with a small group of monks from Bavaria and founded Saint Vincent, the first permanent Benedictine institution established in the United States.
Wimmer believed the Benedictine model of combining prayer, scholarship, and practical work was exactly what the Catholic immigrant communities flooding into western Pennsylvania needed. The college was incorporated by the Commonwealth in eighteen seventy and grew into a full liberal arts institution. More than that, Saint Vincent became a seed institution: a string of abbeys and colleges across the country trace their direct foundation to this campus in Latrobe. The tradition Wimmer planted here stretched eventually from New Jersey to California, making this quiet Westmoreland County campus one of the most consequential religious founding sites in American history.
