Doylestown Agricultural Works
Pennsylvania
This factory site tells a story of American industrial rise and fall compressed into several decades. Built in the nineteenth century, the Doylestown Agricultural Works produced farm machinery and ironwork and was among the area's major employers. It sold products widely, and like hundreds of similar midsize metalworking firms across Pennsylvania, it was a quiet engine of the nation's industrial growth.
By nineteen twenty the works had passed through several owners. It closed its manufacturing operations entirely in the nineteen thirties, a casualty of Depression-era consolidation and the shift toward large-scale industrial agriculture.
