Holbert Racing: A Porsche Dynasty

Near Trenton, Pennsylvania

On this road in Warrington, the Holbert family built one of the most accomplished sports car racing dynasties in American history, all from a small operation that started with Porsches. Bob Holbert opened one of the first Porsche dealerships in the United States here in the early nineteen fifties and started racing almost immediately, winning four national championships through the Sports Car Club of America and adding the United States Road Racing Championship in nineteen sixty-three driving a Shelby Cobra. His son Al took the program further than anyone could have predicted.

Al Holbert won five IMSA GT Championships, setting a record of roughly fifty series victories. He won the Twenty-Four Hours of Le Mans three times, in nineteen eighty-three, eighty-six, and eighty-seven, driving Porsche nine fifty-six and nine sixty-two prototypes that dominated endurance racing in that era. The team ran from this site until Al's death in a plane crash in nineteen eighty-eight.

Father and son, one track, two eras, one of the great American racing stories.
