Hilldale Athletic Club: Negro League Champions of Darby

Pennsylvania

At Hilldale Park in Darby, just outside Philadelphia, one of the most decorated Negro League teams in history played from nineteen ten to nineteen thirty-two. The Hilldale Athletic Club, sometimes called the Darby Daisies, won the Eastern Colored League championship three times and captured the Negro League World Series in nineteen twenty-five. The roster reads like a Hall of Fame roll call: Pop Lloyd, Judy Johnson, Martin Dihigo, Oscar Charleston, Biz Mackey, and Louis Santop all took the field here. Club owner Ed Bolden was also a driving force behind forming the Eastern Colored League itself, helping to structure Black professional baseball at a time when the major leagues remained firmly closed.
