Tatiana Proskouriakoff: Cracking the Maya Code

Near Wilmington, Pennsylvania

Near Fairview Avenue lived one of the most important archaeologists of the twentieth century, though her name remains unfamiliar to most people.

Tatiana Proskouriakoff was born in Russia in nineteen oh nine and came to the United States as a child. She spent decades studying Maya ruins, and in nineteen sixty she published a landmark paper demonstrating that Maya hieroglyphs recorded actual historical events and named real rulers, not just calendrical abstractions. It was a breakthrough that overturned a generation of scholarly assumptions and unlocked the reading of dozens of inscriptions.

She received the Kidder Award in nineteen sixty-two, one of the highest honors in American archaeology. Guatemala awarded her the Order of the Quetzal, its highest honor for a foreign national. She died in nineteen eighty-five, having reshaped how the world understands one of its great ancient civilizations.
