Hotel Fauchere: Milford's Presidential Table
Pennsylvania
The Hotel Fauchere in Milford opened as a summer retreat in eighteen fifty-two, but it became famous for something far more specific: its table. Louis Fauchere, who is said to have worked as a chef at Delmonico's in New York City, one of the most celebrated restaurants in nineteenth-century America, took over the property and reimagined what a hotel dining room could be. He brought fine ingredients, progressive recipes, and, reportedly, the very concept of presenting guests with a printed menu listing choices.
American presidents, Pennsylvania governors, and generations of artists and writers made their way to this corner of the Pocono Mountains specifically for the food. The hotel has been restored and continues to operate, carrying more than a century and a half of culinary history.
