Milford, Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania

Milford, the seat of Pike County, sits on the Delaware River just south of where Interstate Eighty-Four crosses from New York into Pennsylvania. It was incorporated as a borough in eighteen seventy-four but the town was founded in seventeen ninety-six by Judge John Biddis. The town is most associated with Gifford Pinchot, the first chief of the United States Forest Service and twice governor of Pennsylvania, who maintained his family estate called Grey Towers here.

Pinchot and his mentor President Theodore Roosevelt transformed American conservation policy from this base, and Grey Towers is now a National Historic Landmark operated by the Forest Service. The village of Milford retains an unusually intact Victorian streetscape, and the Grey Towers site draws visitors who want to understand where American land stewardship was invented.
