Indian Hill Battlefield, Colonel Hartley's Campaign of Seventeen Seventy-Eight

Pennsylvania

A mile southeast of here, on a hill above Bradford County, one of the most intense frontier engagements of the Revolutionary War played out in late September, seventeen seventy-eight. Colonel Thomas Hartley led a punishing expedition northward from Fort Muncy that had already burned Tioga and Queen Esther's Town, two key Native raiding bases along the Susquehanna. At Indian Hill, Hartley's force met and defeated a large Indian war party in what the marker calls the most desperate engagement between Indians and white men in the county's history.

The campaign effectively ended Indigenous raiding in Bradford County and cleared the way for General Sullivan's larger punitive expedition the following year. The old Warrior Path and the Sullivan Trail, two of the region's most traveled historic routes, passed within feet of this spot.
