Joseph Elliot, Soldier of Two Fronts
Pennsylvania
Joseph Elliot fought on two of the most violent frontiers of the American Revolution. At Trenton on December twenty-fifth, seventeen seventy-six, he reportedly crossed the Delaware with Washington. Six years later, in seventeen eighty-two, on the Pennsylvania frontier near the present Wyoming Valley, he took part in the fighting at Lime Hill, where a raiding party attacked local settlers.
Earlier in the war he had survived the Wyoming Massacre, reportedly escaping by swimming the Susquehanna River. His life traced the full brutal arc of the Revolutionary frontier.
