John Hanson Steelman: Swedish Trader on the Pennsylvania Frontier
Pennsylvania
Long before roads or towns reached this valley, John Hanson Steelman was here. Born of Swedish parents along the Delaware River in sixteen fifty-five, Steelman became an Indian trader and interpreter, working across both Maryland and Pennsylvania and living until seventeen forty-nine. He is described as the first European settler in this valley, arriving at a time when the only paths through southern Pennsylvania were indigenous trails.
As both a trader and interpreter, Steelman occupied a specific and important role on the colonial frontier: someone who could move between worlds, conduct commerce, and translate between communities that otherwise had little common language. His name, Hance, was an anglicization common among Swedish settlers. A marker first placed in nineteen twenty-four recognized him as a founding presence in this part of Adams County.
