Mower General Hospital
Pennsylvania
From January eighteen sixty-three to May eighteen sixty-five, this site was home to Mower General Hospital, described as one of the largest United States Army hospitals in the country. Designed by the noted architect John McArthur Jr., it sprawled across twenty-seven acres and held roughly thirty-six hundred beds.
More than twenty thousand wounded and sick Union soldiers were treated within its wards over two years of war. When the fighting ended, the hospital was dismantled. Today no trace of the original buildings remains, but the scale of what stood here speaks to the staggering human cost of the Civil War and the massive medical infrastructure the Union built to absorb it.
