Peale: A Coal Town That Vanished

Pennsylvania

In eighteen eighty-three, a coal company carved a company town out of the Pennsylvania mountains and named it Peale. Within two years, nearly three hundred buildings stood here, and about two thousand five hundred people lived and worked the Moshannon coal seam. The company ran everything in town.

But the seam ran out faster than anyone expected, and the miners eventually left. The houses were demolished or dragged away. Today little remains in the forest beyond an old cemetery and traces of foundations.
