Somerset, Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania
The town of Somerset sits in the Allegheny highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania, named after Somersetshire in England. The county itself was carved out of Bedford County on April seventeenth, seventeen ninety-five, and the village that became its seat had already been laid out the same year. On March fifth, eighteen oh four, Somerset was formally incorporated as a borough.
The surrounding region had long been coal and coke country, and the town served as the commercial anchor of the Laurel Highlands. Today the name Somerset County is known worldwide for a different reason: just a few miles to the north lies the crash site of United Airlines Flight Ninety-Three, forever linking this quiet Appalachian county seat to one of the defining days in American history.
