The Blairsville Fugitive Slave Rescue

Pennsylvania

In eighteen fifty-eight, the residents of Blairsville made a decision that put them squarely against federal law. Slave hunters had come to the town to arrest an escaped enslaved man known as Newman, claiming him under the Fugitive Slave Act. Local citizens intervened and freed Newman before the arrest could be completed.

Newman had reportedly been sheltered here by local abolitionists. Indiana County, where Blairsville sits, was a well-established stop on that network, with sympathetic abolitionist families providing food, shelter, and guidance to freedom seekers moving north. The rescue here was one of hundreds of quiet acts of defiance that collectively undermined the Fugitive Slave Act throughout the decade before the Civil War.
