Wildwood Park: From Wetzel's Swamp to City Beautiful
Near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
Before it was a park, this land was simply called Wetzel's Swamp. The transformation began in nineteen oh one, when Harrisburg hired landscape architect Warren Manning to design a system of green spaces as part of the national City Beautiful movement. Manning's plan for Wildwood, the largest of several Harrisburg parks, blended flood control with recreation and nature preservation.
Two of the movement's most passionate advocates, Horace McFarland and Mira Lloyd Dock, pushed city leaders to act at a time when urban parks were considered an almost radical civic investment. Wildwood took shape around a lake formed by damming Paxton Creek in nineteen oh eight and has grown into a wetland sanctuary offering educational programs and nature walks just minutes from the state capitol. It remains a testament to the idea that swamps, properly understood, are assets.
