Wissahickon Boys Club — Germantown's First
Pennsylvania
The building you are passing on West Coulter Street has been a gathering place for Germantown youth for more than a century. Germantown Quakers founded the Wissahickon Boys Club in the late eighteen hundreds, and in nineteen oh six it joined the national Boys Club Federation, becoming the first member in the entire federation to serve a predominantly African American population.
Under its early leaders, the club built a national reputation for outstanding youth programming during decades when most civic institutions in the country were still rigidly segregated. The club later became the Wissahickon Boys and Girls Club and moved to this location on West Coulter Street.
