Kingstree Station: A Great American Station
South Carolina
The Kingstree depot in Williamsburg County, South Carolina was built for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in nineteen oh nine. It served rail passengers through the mid-twentieth century, survived the merger of the Atlantic Coast Line into the Seaboard Coast Line in nineteen sixty-seven, and then lost passenger service in nineteen seventy-one when the railroads withdrew from intercity travel. Amtrak restored service on June fifteenth, nineteen seventy-six, when the Palmetto began stopping here.
The station has since been named one of Amtrak's Great American Stations, a designation for historic depots that still serve the national passenger rail network. It sits within the Kingstree Historic District, which includes the county courthouse, the public library, and a stretch of early-twentieth-century commercial buildings along Main Street. Kingstree remains one of the smaller communities on the East Coast's long-distance rail network.
