The King's Highway: Washington Rode Here

South Carolina

The road passing through this part of coastal South Carolina follows one of the oldest colonial routes in North America. The King's Highway stretched along the Atlantic seaboard toward Charleston, and in seventeen ninety-one President George Washington rode it south on a grand tour of the new nation. He wanted to see the states that had suffered most during the Revolution, to be seen by citizens who had not yet laid eyes on their president, and to bind the fragile new union together through his physical presence.

Washington spent weeks traveling through the Carolinas and Georgia, attending banquets and reviewing local militia. The Daughters of the American Revolution placed this marker long ago, ensuring that the road's history would not be forgotten as it was paved over and modernized.
