William Few Bridge on the South Tyger River
Near Greenville, South Carolina
The South Tyger River crossing here has carried the name Few's Bridge since at least eighteen eighty-two. Before that, William Few is said to have built the first bridge at this spot, and later a covered bridge, making this one of those rare crossings where a family's name has stuck to a place for generations.
Covered bridges were practical necessities on the Carolina Piedmont. The roof and siding protected the wooden truss structure from the region's heavy rains, extending the life of a bridge that might otherwise rot sooner. Few's Bridge hints at an era when private builders often connected farms to market towns. Most of these crossings have long since been replaced by concrete and steel, but the name endures here on the South Tyger as a quiet monument to a builder history barely remembers.
