Herreid, South Dakota
South Dakota
Herreid is a small city in Campbell County, South Dakota, named after Charles Herreid, the fourth governor of South Dakota, when the Soo Line Railroad pushed a branch into this corner of the Missouri Coteau in nineteen oh one. The town was founded on August twenty-sixth of that year and incorporated by nineteen twelve. Campbell County is one of the least populated counties in the Great Plains, a rolling grassland country along the North Dakota border.
Herreid became the commercial center for surrounding ranch families, and the grain elevator and livestock auction remain its economic anchors. Its population peaked at seven hundred sixty-seven in nineteen sixty and has declined since.
