Alamo, Tennessee: Named for Davy Crockett's Last Stand
Tennessee
The small town of Alamo, Tennessee carries a name chosen to honor a congressman who represented this part of the state and then died in Texas.
David Crockett served in the United States House of Representatives from western Tennessee before heading west after losing his seat in eighteen thirty-five. He died defending the Alamo in San Antonio on March sixth, eighteen thirty-six. When Tennessee created Crockett County in eighteen seventy-one from portions of four surrounding counties, the law organizing the county specified that the county seat must carry the name of the battle where Crockett fell. So the seat became Alamo.
The town was incorporated in nineteen eleven and today has a population of about twenty-three hundred. The Crockett County courthouse anchors the traditional court square at the center of town.
