Acton State Historic Site: Elizabeth Crockett's Final Home

Texas

Here in Acton lies Elizabeth Patton Crockett, second wife of the legendary frontiersman Davy Crockett. She married him in eighteen fifteen, and after his death at the Alamo in eighteen thirty-six, she raised their family alone in Tennessee for nearly two decades. In the mid eighteen fifties she moved west to claim a land grant in this area of Hood County.

She lived out her final years on the Texas frontier she and her husband had symbolized, and when she died in eighteen sixty she was buried here, and decades later the State of Texas set aside the burial ground as its smallest state park, just one-tenth of an acre, to honor her. Her grave is marked by a towering monument completed in nineteen thirteen, a quiet tribute to a woman who outlasted the legend.
