Galena Park: Lead Paint and Ship Channel Dreams

Texas

Galena Park sits directly on the Houston Ship Channel in Harris County, incorporated in nineteen thirty-five. Its name comes from galena, the lead sulfide mineral, because the Galena Signal Oil Company built a major refinery here in the early nineteen twenties, and the town that formed around the plant took the company's name.

For decades the Ship Channel corridor, including Galena Park, was the industrial engine of the Gulf Coast, processing oil, chemicals, and steel moving in and out of the port. The refinery is long gone but the industrial character remains: tank farms, chemical terminals, and barge traffic still define the waterfront. Galena Park today has roughly ten thousand residents, predominantly Latino, and sits in one of the most polluted air-quality zones in the United States as a direct inheritance of a century of petrochemical industry.
