Sam Houston Regional Library: Southeast Texas's Memory Vault
Texas
Three miles north of Liberty, Texas, on land donated in nineteen seventy-three by former Governor Price Daniel and his wife, the Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center opened in nineteen seventy-seven as the official historical depository for ten Southeast Texas counties. It holds thousands of cubic feet of government records, manuscript collections, maps, photographs, newspapers, and rare books. The center is named for Sam Houston, whose life in Texas began nearby: Houston crossed into Texas in December of eighteen thirty-two. The museum on site features a permanent exhibit called Atascosito: The History of Southeast Texas.
