Mont Belvieu: A City Built on Underground Caverns

Texas

Mont Belvieu in Chambers County looks like an ordinary small Texas city, but beneath its surface lies one of the most important energy infrastructure systems in North America. The salt domes underlying this area have been solution-mined into enormous caverns that store natural gas liquids, including propane, butane, and ethane, for pipelines that feed much of the eastern United States.

The place began as Barbers Hill, named for its first permanent settler, and was renamed Mont Belvieu when the post office opened in eighteen ninety. Oil production at the Barbers Hill field began in nineteen eighteen. Energy storage operations expanded dramatically from the nineteen sixties onward as the petrochemical industry recognized the geology's value. Today Mont Belvieu is one of the world's largest natural gas liquids hubs, with dozens of pipelines converging here, the price of propane across America set partly by what moves in and out of those caverns just below the quiet streets.
