Texas Air and Space Museum

Texas

Out near the Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport stands the Texas Air and Space Museum, a tribute to the skies that shaped this High Plains city. It started in nineteen eighty-nine as a passion project of local aviation enthusiasts, first at Tradewind Airport, then at the old Amarillo terminal that served commercial flights from nineteen twenty-nine through nineteen seventy-two. After a financial squeeze forced a closure in two thousand seven, the museum rebuilt and reopened in twenty ten with a new collection that includes a NASA Gulfstream shuttle trainer flown forty-nine times by Rick Husband, the Amarillo-born commander of Space Shuttle Columbia. His name is on the airport, and his aircraft is parked inside.
