Joseph, Utah

Utah

Joseph is a small farming town in the Sevier River valley, not far from Richfield, and like every settlement in this stretch of central Utah its founding was interrupted by conflict. Families first tried to put down roots in eighteen seventy-one, only to be caught up in the final years of the Black Hawk War between Ute bands and Mormon settlers. The town was laid out in eighteen seventy-two under the direction of Church leader Joseph A.

Young, and named in his honor. Joseph Angell Young was a son of Brigham Young and a senior figure in the Latter-day Saint hierarchy. The town he named kept his first name and today remains a quiet agricultural community of a few hundred residents along the Sevier River.
