Liberty Pioneer Monument

Near Ogden, Utah

This monument marks the founding of Liberty, a small settlement tucked into the Ogden Valley beneath the Wasatch peaks. Long before the pioneers arrived, the native peoples of the region knew this place well.

The first settler family spent the hard winter of eighteen fifty-nine here, with more families arriving the following year. A man named John Freeman gave the place the name Liberty, and the name stuck. Getting in and out of the valley was difficult until a toll road was cut through Ogden Canyon in the early days, which became the main route down into Ogden. The valley grew slowly as a farming and ranching community, an offshoot of nearby Eden and Huntsville. The Daughters of Utah Pioneers placed a marker here to remember those first winters, when a single family gambled everything on a cold green valley named for freedom.
