Fleming Museum: Vermont's Museum of Five Thousand Years
Near Burlington, Vermont
The Fleming Museum of Art on the University of Vermont campus in Burlington opened in nineteen thirty-one, though parts of its collection had been held by university departments since eighteen twenty-six. The building was named for Robert Hull Fleming after his niece donated the funds for its construction.
The museum holds roughly twenty-four thousand works spanning five thousand years of human history: Tang Dynasty tomb figures from China, seventeenth-century Northern European paintings, Native American objects dating to around eight hundred of the Common Era, World War One recruiting posters, and historic Vermont farm tools. It is one of the oldest and most encyclopedic collections in New England outside of Boston, and admission is free to Vermont residents and university students. The museum sits a short walk from the Church Street pedestrian marketplace and the Lake Champlain waterfront.
