Snoqualmie: Falls, Lumber, and Twin Peaks

Washington

The town of Snoqualmie grew up in the shadow of a two-hundred-sixty-eight-foot waterfall that the Snoqualmie people had considered sacred for thousands of years. Lumber barons arrived in the eighteen eighties, and a large all-electric mill opened across the river in nineteen seventeen. In the late eighteen nineties, a power company dug a tunnel through the basalt cliff and installed turbines inside the rock itself, generating electricity from the falls in a plant that still runs today. The town stayed a quiet mill community until nineteen ninety, when television director David Lynch filmed the Double R Diner scenes of Twin Peaks at Twede's Cafe on North Bend Way, turning the whole Snoqualmie Valley into a pilgrimage site for fans of the show.
