Aldo Leopold Died Here

Near Baraboo, Wisconsin

On April twenty-first, nineteen forty-eight, Aldo Leopold died fighting a grass fire on a neighbor's property near his family's land along the Wisconsin River. He was sixty-one years old. Leopold had spent years restoring a worn-out farm here in Sauk County, watching the land heal through careful tending, writing the essays that would become A Sand County Almanac.

His publisher accepted the manuscript just days before his death. He never saw the book in print. Released in nineteen forty-nine, A Sand County Almanac went on to reshape how Americans thought about wilderness, ecology, and the land ethic.

Leopold is considered one of the founders of the modern environmental movement, and this quiet stretch of Wisconsin river bottom is where his life ended, doing exactly what he always did: caring for the land.
