West Denmark Seminary
Wisconsin
On this ground once stood the West Denmark Seminary, founded in eighteen eighty-seven. It holds a quiet distinction. It was an early seminary of the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
Danish immigrants settled this corner of Wisconsin near Luck and brought with them the ideas of the pastor and philosopher Grundtvig, who preached learning for life and a faith rooted in everyday community. The school trained pastors here only briefly before the seminary moved on. But the community endured. West Denmark still gathers each summer for Danish family camp, keeping alive the songs and the gathering spirit that the immigrants planted in this soil well over a century ago.
